Overlay papers are the decorative, melamine-impregnated face layer used in both High Pressure Laminate (HPL) and Low Pressure Laminate (LPL) systems. They consist of a high-quality décor print sheet bonded under heat and pressure to provide the final visual finish, surface protection and durability.

In HPL: Multiple overlay paper plies (18–70 g/m²) are stacked over phenolic-impregnated kraft cores and consolidated at 7–13 MPa and 140–160 °C. This creates a countertop-grade sheet with exceptional scratch, impact and moisture resistance, available in gloss, matte, textured and specialty finishes.

In LPL: A single overlay paper (60–120 g/m²) is pressed at 0.5–1 MPa onto MDF or particleboard. Although thinner and less robust than HPL, modern LPL overlay grades incorporate wear-resistant melamine resins and micro-embossed textures to improve scratch resistance, chemical tolerance and edge integrity for cabinetry and furniture.
